AI-mediated discovery

AI search rewards
context, not keywords.

The next generation of client acquisition is going to be decided by whether you're legible to the systems doing the recommending — and those systems read structure first, prose second.

The thesis

Search was about matching strings. Discovery is about matching fit.

For twenty years, SEO was an arms race of keywords and backlinks. Clients typed three words, scanned ten results, and clicked the website that was cheapest to rank. Advisors with the budget, agency, or patience to win that game got discovered. Most didn't.

That game is ending. The systems clients now use — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, verticalized recommendation engines, even human advisors asking AI for names — care about fit. They want to answer questions like:

"I'm a Canadian citizen who just accepted a role in the US, getting equity compensation for the first time, with a spouse still in Toronto. Who should I talk to?"

A keyword match cannot answer that. A structured graph can.

What AI systems ingest

Five signals that decide whether you're recommended.

1. Who you serve

Founders, executives, retirees, physicians, newcomers, crypto natives, cross-border families. Vague positioning collapses to "financial advisor" — a non-answer.

2. Where you practice

Not just the HQ. State licenses, provincial licensing, cross-border competencies, virtual practice patterns — all decide eligibility before anything else.

3. What you specialize in

Depth over breadth. Crypto, equity compensation, divorce, estate, physicians, flat-fee planning, cross-border. The sharper the claim, the cleaner the match.

4. How you're differentiated

Fee model, minimums, engagement style, conflicts of interest, constraints. The differentiators that are obvious in person need to be explicit in structure.

5. When you're the right fit

Life events, career stages, financial moments. The context around why now is when the match matters — and is what generic firm copy never captures.

Everything else

Disclosures, affiliations, credentials, publications, alumni networks, personal tenure in the niche — all part of the structural signal AI systems weigh.

Why now

The window is short and structural.

Most fee-only advisors do not yet show up in AI-mediated discovery in a meaningful way. That will change, in one of two directions. Either structured advisor data becomes broadly available and the advisors in it are the ones who get recommended, or platforms build proprietary graphs and advisors pay escalating rents for position.

Wellspent is the first version of the public, citation-backed, structured advisor layer — built by advisors, for the AI-era discovery stack. Membership now is orders of magnitude cheaper than membership will be when it matters.

Become legible to the layer that matters.

Structured presence is cheap to build early, expensive to build late, and impossible to build retroactively.
